Abstract
This study analyses factors that prevent use of leisure and social welfare facilities amon the elderly in three geographical types and compared the identified factors. Study sample is chosen based on stratified sampling method based on population and data from the sample were collected by one to one interview. Data from 1060 individuals whose age was 65 or older and reside in Korea were used for analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses were used. Intra-person factors, interpersonal factors, structural factors. and controlling factors were entered step by step. There were differences in factors that prevent use of leisure and social welfare facilities among the elderly depending on the geographical types. The elderly who reside in urban areas are more likely to use leisure and social welfare facilities when they are older and live closer to the facilities are, and monthly income is lower. For the elderly who reside in complex areas with urban and rural characteristics, when facilities are more convenient and when they are older and female, the elderly were more likely to use leisure and social welfare facilities. The elderly who reside in rural areas tend to use leisure and social welfare facilities when they are more depressive, female, or older. Findings of this study suggest that different approaches depending on geographical characteristics are necessary.
